Description
Simple Things Fermentations’ Honey Tripel is a Belgian-style Tripel brewed with Manuka honey.
A strong, golden ale brewed with malted barley, Tettnang hops and Manuka Honey from New Zealand’s Taylor Pass and fermented with a Belgian yeast strain selected for its big fruity characteristics with hints of subtle spice. Like all good Tripels, its joy lies in the many levels and layers of flavour wrapped up in a beer that’s deceptively light and easy drinking, despite its’ strength.
Pouring a deep golden colour with white foam, the aroma is classic Tripel banana fruit and cereal with soft honey notes. There’s a warming glow and plenty to savour but it’s a smooth and immensely enjoyable beer with a crisp, dry finish.
Simple Things say “Number 33 in our Big Ideas Series is a brand new beer; we’ve had Tripel on the ‘to brew’ list for ages and when a friend of mine offered us some incredible Manuka honey from New Zealand it was the perfect opportunity to get working on our take on the iconic Belgian style.
“We use the honey as a brewing sugar, added to the boil and fermented out by the Ardenne yeast strain that’s the real driving force behind the beer’s flavour. A trace of honey remains in the layers of aromatics but this is a classic Tripel first and foremost – big fruity banana aroma with cereal and a touch of spice; soft and unctuous with a dry finish making it deceptively easy drinking.
“It was the first of our beers to kick at IndyMan last week and we had loads of lovely feedback on the keg version. October feels like exactly the right time for it; deep and warming but with a spring in its step, and the most inviting colour that echoes the deep glow of autumnal evening light.
“Getting this one right feels good; it’s a style we love to drink ourselves. It’s a simple beer but there’s plenty of scope for missing the mark; we (and the bees) put a lot of work into it so it’s super satisfying to take a sip – or talk to someone across the bar – and know that we landed it right where we wanted.”
